CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Violetâs Wish
âWant to go shopping?â Courtney asked Lynette late on Sunday afternoon. Theyâd had a grueling swim practice, and were headed back to the dorm.
âNothing good is open today,â Lynette answered lazily. âItâs Sunday.â
âTargetâs open,â said Courtney. Most of the stores in town were closed, but Target had extended hours. âI need to pick up some things for the swim meet.â
âThe next St. Augustus meet?â Lynette asked, giving Courtney a wary, sideways look. âItâs not for months.â
The headmistress had dismissed her idea of the loot bags. Sheâd then pitched it to Coach Laurel, who told her attendance to swim meets wasnât reliant on the swag they provided.
Courtney was convinced they were wrong. Theyâd see, if she gave them an example of just how over-the-top her loot bags would be.
âIâll take you for dinner after, if you come,â Courtney said to Lynette. Target was a forty-five minute walk, and sheâd have packages to bring back. She knew Margaret wouldnât be interested in coming.
âAre Margaret and Violet coming too?â Lynette asked, looking sideways at Courtney as they walked.
Courtney hesitated. Sheâd asked Lynette because Margaret was starting to lecture her about her obsession with team captain. It was getting on Courtneyâs nerves. Lynette also had better taste than Violet, whoâd probably want everything in the loot bags to be purple.
âNo,â Courtney answered, without offering further explanation.
âDinner at Luigiâs?â Lynette asked.
Courtney smiled. Lynette would come. The coach would have to agree this was a good idea when she saw what Courtney had in mind.

Courtney opened the dorm room door softly as she returned after curfew on Sunday night. Sheâd just come from the student lounge, where sheâd sat in her favorite corner, putting together the loot bags she was going to present to Coach Laurel. Bessie had come around to shoo the last remaining students to their dorms, but Courtney had convinced her she was working on a special project for Coach Laurel and it had to be done tonight.
To Courtneyâs surprise, Bessie had said she could stay until it was done.
Courtney had carefully scripted calligraphy notes that had given her hand cramps, placing the notes inside the bags. The blue ribbons that held the handles of the bags together had been tied and tied again until they were just right. Each bag had meticulously chosen gifts inside, each collection worth more than one hundred dollars. Sheâd probably have to pare down the contents to roll out to the whole meet, but the coach would be able to see her vision. Any girl would be thrilled to get these, she was sure.
She juggled the three finished sample bags in her hands to reach for the light switch in her room, but Margaretâs bedside lamp was already on. Blinking, she registered Margaret sitting up in her bed, but there was also someone sitting on Courtneyâs bed.
âViolet!â Courtney exclaimed, in surprise, âWhat are you doing here? Itâs past lights out!â
âBessie told us youâd negotiated to stay out after lights out,â Margaret said, drily. âHow did
